Workshop recording: Sean Corfield on fusebox 5.5

Sean Corfield gave a great presentation on fusebox last night. Sadly I had a rather ill stomach so I had to hand over to Dan Lancelot to run the meeting. Sean covers the history of fusebox as well as some of the latest features in the alpha version of fusebox5.5.

fusebox.org - gosh you look nice!

The fusebox.org website has been relaunched and to quote from Sean Corfields blog (I hope you don't mind Sean):

In this morning's keynote at CFUNITED, Michael unveiled the brand new Fusebox website. In addition to a completely new look'n'feel, the new site contains a lot more content and (we hope) is much better organized.

Michael also mentioned that Fusebox 5.5 is currently in Alpha and has a lot of new features. I'm actively working on the documentation for those new features so that we can officially release a Beta build.

A great job has been done on the site like:

Ray Camden talks about coldfusion frameworks

In this episode of the cfFrameworks podcast we have an interview with the cfJedi himself Ray Camden. This is the shortest interview to date at just over 17 mins

I think it was my mission in this interview to keep asking Ray the same questions, sorry Ray.  That said, Ray covers Model-Glue, Spectra and he talks about his baby steps into Fusebox.
It would be great to get some feed back about these interviews, good or bad, so please leave some comments below.

Ray Camden

Raymond Camden is a long-time ColdFusion user. He has written many books on the subject and presents on ColdFusion topics often. His blog software, BlogCFC, is in use by numerous writers across the world and is completely free and open source. Raymond also shares many other applications covering forums, wikis, and other needs. He is one of the managers of the Acadiana MMUG and runs a "virtual" ColdFusion Jedi User Group over Breeze.

For his day job, Raymond is an independent contractor.

Sean Corfield on Fusebox and Frameworks

Sean Corfield talks about the fusebox framework, lexicons and some of the dark secrets of frameworks. He also covers some Object Oriented principles such as Duck Typing and Coupling

Sean has worked in IT for over twenty years. He started out writing database systems (in assembler) and compilers (in various languages, including COBOL!) before moving in mobile telecoms and finally to the web about six years ago. Along the way, he worked on the ISO and ANSI C++ Standards committees for eight years but then turned to Java (in '97) and gave up C++, although he still maintains one of the textbook reference websites: C++ - Beyond the ARM.

Sean is a staunch advocate of software standards and best practice, having written C++ coding guidelines for several companies during the 90's and more recently maintaining the Adobe ColdFusion MX Coding Guidelines which are also published for the ColdFusion community. He has also given several seminar talks, both in-house and publicly, on these subjects.

Fusebox
Fusebox is the most popular framework for building ColdFusion. "Fuseboxers" find that the framework releases them from much of the drudgery of writing applications and enables them to focus their efforts on creating great, customer-focused software.

Fusebox website design compition

Taken from Sandra Clark:

Fusebox is going to get a facelift and we need your help.

Things are really starting to happen within Team Fusebox and one of the main goals is to start off fresh with a new and improved website. New content, new everything. Including a new look. Since for the most part, we are programmers and not designers, we need your help. So we are announcing the first ever Fusebox Website design contest:

* Site submittals will close on March 8, 2007, 5pm EST. Submittals after this time will not be accepted.
* A winner will be announced on March 29, 2007.

Interested? head over to http://trac.fuseboxframework.org/fusebox/wiki/WebSiteDesignRequirements for the complete set of rules, design requirements and submittal information.

What do you get out of it?
You mean besides the warm fuzzy feeling that comes from contributing to the community? Isn't that enough? No? Well then how about:

* 2 Free passes to CFOBjective , held in Minneapolis, Minnesota, May 3 - 6, 2007 (courtesy of Jared Rypka-Hauer)
* 1 Free pass to CFUNITED, held in Bethesda, Maryland, June 27 - 30, 2007 (courtesy of Michael Smith of Teratech)
* "Site designed by:" with corresponding link on the footer of the homepage

Fusebox survey - help decide its future

Okay we're a little late plugging this one but Michael Smith is asking people how they can improve Fusebox and they also want to know what you like about it and what you want to see improved. You can take the survey here

This is a great chance to voice your opinion so don't miss out.

fusebox changes hands

Hal Helms has announced that fusebox has now changed hands:

In recent years, John Quarto-vonTivadar and I have been the "custodians" of Fusebox. As of today, I'm very happy to announce we're given that trust to TeraTech (www.teratech.com). Michael Smith, CEO, has been a long advocate and contributor to Fusebox and will now hold the reins. John and I will be helping as time allows, but feel certain Michael will do a great job. Special thanks are also due to Sean Corfield and his team of developers who built Fusebox 5.

I'm looking forward to see what's going to happen with Fusebox. I know they have a new site on the way so maybe this will be a new building block for Michael.

cfFrameworks bi-monthly Roundup 15-10-2006

Model-Glue Vs Model-Glue:Unity

Jared gives a good in site to the differences between Model-Glue Vs Model-Glue:Unity - which basically isn't a great deal. Action packs are big news which he explains as being functionality. If you're unsure if you should use MG:U then check this post out. He also does a good job of talking about 'extendable built-in events' - these, for examples, allow you to add events at the start/end of request like onRequest Start in application.cfc.

Reactor update

Dougs back with a great round up to the updates that have happened to Reactor. Beth Bowen has been helping with a lot of bugs and Doug has been working on Performance. With a trimmed down CFC collection and the removal of a base abstract object made some differences but the thing to make the difference was the introduction of a OO query facade. Read Dougs blog for full details.

cfEclipse and fusebox

Mark Drew is asking for ideas that should be used for creating a fusebox plugin for cfEclipse.

I just wanted to ask the community out there, if there is a need/want for a plugin that helps you whilst developing fusebox applications?

If you have any ideas pop over to his post and add them in his comments. Mark Drew: Fusebox Plugin for Eclipse/CFEclipse
